TF Player Ratings - United 1-1 FC Barcelona
Scott on a night when the players stood up and made us proud
Aaron Ramsdale - 7
Had as much to do tonight as in his League Cup appearance against Bradford. The only hairy moment was from his own player and his distribution was spot on. No issues at all tonight. I quite fancied him to save the penalty which made me look pretty stupid.
Kieran Trippier - 7
Trippier might not have the legs anymore, but throw him head first into an elite level football match like this and he drags the team kicking and screaming through.bHis best performance for a while and this was after looking seemingly injured in the first half. In fact the only bad moment of the night came when we inexplicably gave him the ball when he was plainly injured. A big player over there as well.
Malick Thiaw - 7
I haven't seen the penalty back but what a sickener. Before the kick in the balls, Thiaw was excellent. When the ball was played through he gave them a yard, didn't dive in and looked comfortable. Until the last seconds of course.
Dan Burn - 7
You got the full Burn repertoire tonight. Yes, uncomfortable with the ball at his feet but the sort of fire in the belly that can’t not inspire everyone around him. Almost scored a calamitous own goal, but was a danger in their box as well and just couldn't force in a Tonali header.
Lewis Hall - 10
A sensational performance from Hall tonight. Yes he does this quite regularly and has been our stand out player for a good while, but you have to put this performance into context by recognising the quality of the opposition.
The run out of defence to set up Osula? The way the ball seemed to stick to his toe? The way he furiously won every tackle he was going in for ?
An exceptional modern day full back and one we have to cherish while he's here.
Joelinton - 8
Played the enforcer down to a tee tonight and was very good indeed. The referee tonight wasn’t exactly the one you'd pick to oversee a ‘Joelinton plays the enforcer’ role but he got around that and was desperately unlucky not to be on the winning side. Had a goal disallowed for offside but ended the game going to town on Gordon for THAT pass. That was one of the few things he couldn't control tonight.
Sandro Tonali - 7
In games like this we really need to see Tonali take the game by the scruff of the neck.bWe didn't quite see that, but his work rate was exceptional. The fact he was the one trying to get on the end of Gordon's late pass said it all. He gave everything .
Jacob Ramsey - 9
Again, taking in consideration of the opposition, this was far and away Ramsey's best game for Newcastle. In the first half hour especially, he was our best player. Ramsey is now getting that run of games and he's improving every time. Him dovetailing Joelinton and picking up the scraps from the scraps was something to look at for our next home match. Very good.
Anthony Elanga - 7
As with most of his season so far it was the execution which let him down. Should really have scored in the first half (VAR would have ruled it out anyway) and when he did get the ball in early (which I was crying out for him to do) he put in a perfect cross which no one took on. Probably because no one expected it. That said, a tad unlucky to get substituted.
Harvey Barnes - 7
I was trying to work out how I was going to present this rating before they equalised. How to give the player who scored the winning goal v Barcelona less than seven? I mean it's pretty hard to do that isn't it?bHowever I just thought apart from the goal he was as ’wishy washy' as he's been since rescuing us against Leeds.
Also hit the post and it goes to show that he's really one of those players who can do nothing for most of the game then strike ruthlessly. Quite a skill actually, albeit a pretty frustrating one.
William Osula - 7
You know what ? I thought he did ok. When we first saw the line up it was a bit in my mind like when Dougal was allowed to do a funeral on ‘Father Ted’. YOU PUT OSULA UP FRONT AGAINST BARCELONA!!! But, he did OK. Not a massive threat, but never let them have a second in possession and was a critical first point of defence when they were looking to prance around on the ball.
Osula playing also lays bare the summer transfer debacle. That's for another day though.
SUBSTITUTES
Livramento, for Trippier 66 minutes - 6
Had one decent run forward and pass to Gordon, but quietly did his business otherwise.
Jacob Murphy, for Elanga 67 minutes - 7
The minute he rushed on you knew something was brewing. It was definitely either going to be something as shitty as a Fosters (the off-balance slash over the bar) or something truly excellent like a freezing cold Red Stripe (the cross for Barnes’ goal). To leave the beer analogies for a second, it looked like he was involved in and around the penalty as well, but I was a long way away.
Anthony Gordon - 7
Bizarrely left on the bench as he was poorly, but when he came on he looked as fit as a lop and injected the pace and jeopardy that Barcelona had feared. Good run in the build up to the disallowed goal but quite frankly its all going to be remembered for THAT pass. Joelinton won't let him forget it by the looks of it.
Should have just held it up probably, but no one would have said anything if he had Tonali had streaked clear and cut back for Gordon to make it two. This sums up the enigma that is Anthony Gordon I'm afraid.
Joe Willock, for Barnes 90 minutes - 5
Had one opening and was blocked but not on long to be honest
Scott Robson

Cant really argue with your numbers. Big Joe was immense and probably a nine for me.
We are desperate at times up front though, not for lack of trying last night mind. But when you have £125 m strike force on the subs bench and playing wingers at 9 it's a little worrying.
I must say the referee was a disgrace in the first half. They had three nailed on yellow cards, as blantant as they come. All three would have missed next week as well wirh four of their players on that tightrope. It's almost as if he knew not to book them for that reason. Total joke
The boys did us proud last night though. Class
A very well deserved 10 for Hall
