Excellent piece, Matthew. The only thing I understand about this new competition is that everything at the top stinks of corruption.

It’s difficult to feel sorry for players when they’re paid Monopoly money just to turn up. But like us mere mortals, joints and muscles need time to recover after any strenuous period (a season in the Premier League is certainly that). So I wonder how many of these players will survive next season without picking up an injury?

Terrific piece Matthew! CWC is a total waste of time. 10- 0 FFS. If that's very small change for PIF what are we?

I'd rather be part of whatever is left behind than being part of some form of new word order up to its neck in filth.

Brilliant piece Matthew 👏

F*ck me. That’s a depressing read for a Tuesday (any) morning!!

But it’s spot on, Matthew and articulated perfectly.

Bunch of greedy, self-centred arseholes that care nothing for the legions of real people/fans who made the game what it is/was.

Agreed. Really bloody depressing. It stinks.

Correct man. They're not interested in "real people/fans", they're interested in "customers".

Domestic Leagues are being gradually and deliberately marginalised by both UEFA and FIFA and the wealthy power-brokers pulling the strings behind them. I personally haven't paid any attention to the games and results of this latest football circus as I couldn't care less. I do think though that the resulting increasing player exhaustion/burnout will lead to moves for reduction in domestic league football in favour of a more lucrative "global" club set up?

Oh dear. I wasn't aware of all of that, scary.

Fantastic piece Matthew and of course there's the strange omission of the standard FIFA anti racism messages in the competition. Whatever you think of their impact or relevance we all know why they dropped it and it stinks as much as the guy they're trying to keep onside (sorry bad pun).

I am seriously concerned about our owners but what can we do?

Yes, as Dave says, good point to add. There are so many layers to just how bad this is!

What can we do? Good question. Like everyone else I don't think about any of this when I'm at the match. I enjoy every moment and know that I don't have a choice about the owners. But we can choose not the cheer the chairman when he joins in the celebrations at Wembley. We can choose not to not sing "1-0 to the Saudi boys". We can choose to not unquestioningly celebrate our owners but question them like this instead. Personal choice for everyone, and there are no right answers.

Good point about the missing anti racism messages, Jack. The tournament is even more rotten than I thought.
