He was centre forward when I started going. As you say it was really in European games when he came into his own. They didn't like it up em, or more precisely Wyn terrified them in the air..

Immensely privileged to have see Wyn play. A true Newcastle ledgend!

My first Mag hero as well. He was also better with the ball at his feet than he ever got credit for. And I hope you haven't forgotten the Leazes version of the hippy anthem "let's go to St James's to see Wyn Davies fly through the air" RIP Mighty Wyn

Great tribute Ordy. I first saw Wyn playing against us for Bolton in the promotion clincher in 1965. John McGrath sorted him out that day but he was our player 18 months later. A legend!

Great tribute to a player who provided memorable moments - apart from one line. "...Joe Harvey, who certainly knew how to identify a footballer...".

That is stretching credulity way too far.

Respectfully disagree with that one Chris. Joe, without the help of a DoF or an international team of scouts, brought Supermac, Tony Green, Jim Smith, John Tudor, Tommy Gibb etc etc, to St James. Offhand I can only think of Ian Mitchell who didn't really improve the team. No doubt someone can disagree.....

Regarding Wyn, he really did terrify continental defences. They could only use increasingly violent tactics: when they played Inter, their centre half Faccettii was renamed Hatchetti in the Chronicle!

HtL!
