This really encapsulates what I feel about Sunday. There would be no shame in losing to this excellent Liverpool team, and we likely will. But please, for the love of God, just turn up, put in a shift and leave with heads held high regardless of the result.
I was "like me, you were at St James’ to “watch” on the “big” screen, you’ll know as little as me about what actually happened at Ayresome", the sun shining on it and barely able to see anything as we sat on the pitch. The past is a different country, they did things different then; then again NUFC and limp defeats in big matches seems to be the trope of my lifetime. The second leg play-off evening was also a horrible time to be stood on the Gallowgate - I had my Wembley voucher all ready. NUFC, disappointing us through five decades and more!
Great read n lovely writing style. Chelsea semi final we got a goal but again disappointment.
Hopefully, Eddie has us set up right n everyone is at the peak of their game this weekend. Make chances n try n take em.
Don’t forget those brave Frenchmen who were heavily outnumbered gave their lives to hold off the nazis In Northern France so the allies could escape In boats In may 1940.
Excellent, if depressing, journey through our choking history! I remember the Wimbledon game because that season was our best in my 10 years of supporting us. 8th in the 1st Division & into the 5th round of the cup. And people moan now! I knew we’d lose because Wimbledon had spawned a League Cup win earlier in the season when we should’ve hammered them & we were tipped to win the cup on the Saint & Greavsie.Definitely of a time & place! I also remember the Boro game as I was visiting my Darlo supporting mate at Sheffield Uni. His hall of residence was a huge tower on the top of one of the hugest hills in Sheffield (there a 7 to choose from...). Consequently, his tatty radio could pick up a signal from Outer Mongolia, nevermind TFM radio. Not the greatest 2 hours listening of my life. Let’s just see if we can bottle the joy & optimism of Rob Lee’s semi final goal at Wembley in 2000 & let it push us on to victory on Sunday. Greater miracles have happened! I just can’t think of any at the moment...
Well that was a depressing trip down memory lane. Was at the Boro game, they destroyed us and then did a lap of honour for surviving relegation. Fingers crossed Ken and Barbara turn up Sunday.
I remember the Wimbledon game for Mira kicking Beasant up the arse after the final whistle and promptly legging it past the Silverstone stand to the dressing room!
Thanks for the confidence boost for Sunday, Matthew. 🤦♂️😂 Excellent article, though. We seem to be favouring trips to London at the moment, so let’s hope things will be different this time.
I've been waiting for this ever since the humiliation of '74 so we could get some sort of revenge but, given our current form, I fear it might be a repeat of that result. Nothing would make me happier than to be utterly wrong. H.W.T.L.
I was also there in 74. Spot on Matt. I don't know if you read my piece about us being "Serial chokers" last year. It's in our DNA.

Ha! Yes! Spot on

Yeah, sorry about that, Dave. Fwiw I do think we'll turn up this time. We might not win, but I think we'll give it a good go.
Definitely. The squad’s grown up a bit since last time (a bit too much, some might say), so all we can do is live in hope.
You could add the two nill defeat away to Marseille as well. Great article
Thanks, Mark! And yes, absolutely. Great shout. Marseille is a definite candidate.
Our greatest player in the modern era led us to capitulation in 98 & 99. Great centre forward certainly but a shit captain also !
